Fog of war map apps compared (2026)

Fog of World is the original of the genre and the only app in this table with no free tier at all. The US App Store lists it at $30.00 once with no in-app purchases; Google Play showed EUR 24.99. You pay, you own it, and nothing asks you again.

That suits one kind of walker: someone who already knows they want a lifetime fog map and would rather buy than rent. It is also the harshest way to find out you do not want one, because there is no trial. It tracks continuously in the background and clears fog over everywhere you have physically been, so what it remembers is the street, not the cathedral on it.

Fogbreaker comes at this from the fitness side. It is a step counter first, clearing a live map of your surroundings as you walk, with RPG-style leveling layered on top. Free to download, then $3.99 weekly, $4.99 monthly, $39.99 a year for Pro, or $89.99 for life on the US App Store.

Take it if the number you actually want to move is your step count and the map is the bribe that gets you outside.

MysteryHike is the biggest of the specialists. Google Play shows 100K+ downloads and around 4.78K reviews, against 10K+ downloads for Fog of World and 1,000+ for Walksy. It plays like a game: City Fragments to reveal, leaderboards, discovery badges.

It is also the only app here whose listing says out loud how it stops cheating. It describes verifying real movement under roughly 20 mph, so driving the map open does not count. Free to download, with $6.99 monthly, $39.99 yearly, lifetime at $79.99 or $59.99, and Portal Packs from $12.99 to $119.99 on the US App Store.

Walksy is the lightest of the set, a 31.3 MB download whose whole loop is fog clearing as you walk a city, with cosmetic characters to unlock. Free to download, then characters at $3.99 each, Saphiron at $8.99, and a subscription at $3.99 monthly, $29.99 yearly or $49.99 for life.

Two things to know before you search for it. There are two apps called Walksy, and the one here is Walksy: Fog Map Walking Game, not the audio walking-tour app with the same name. And neither store had enough ratings to show a score when we checked, so there is no crowd to judge it by yet.

Breevy is hard to beat on price, because it does not have one. Free to download with no in-app purchases listed on either store when we checked, and it is doing the most of any free app here: curated hidden gems in 25+ European cities, check in to earn XP, level up, unlock badges, fog map underneath.

It also carries the one honest asterisk in this roundup. Its store copy says you check in at gems to earn XP, but it never says a check-in is GPS verified before it counts, so the table says not stated rather than yes. In its favour, the Play listing does promise your discoveries stay available on spotty connections, which none of the other five state.

Our own app sits in this table on the same terms as everyone else, so you can check it the same way. Claiming usually requires being near the actual location, which is the entire point of it.

One line about the other half of the business and then back to walking: museums, events and walking routes can put their own souvenirs on the map, which is why some of the coins you find belong to somebody in particular.

Here is the difference that decides this for most people, and it is a difference, not a scoreboard. Fog of World, Fogbreaker, Walksy and MysteryHike reward area. The fog lifts behind you and what you own at the end is the shape of everywhere you have been. It looks wonderful on a map, and it counts an empty ring road exactly like a cathedral square.

Souvenirs and Breevy reward named places instead. Something specific waits at a spot somebody chose, and you either stood there or you did not. That is worse if you want the map filled in, because most of a city has nothing to claim. It is better if you want a reason to walk somewhere you would not have gone. Neither is the correct answer. They are two hobbies with the same footwear.
